A post-Brexit deal between the UK and Australia will be on the agenda when Trade Minister Simon Birmingham meets with British foreign secretary Dominic Raab on Thursday.

The two governments are aiming to conclude a comprehensive agreement this year, following the completion of formalities to leave the European Union.

British High Commissioner to Australia, Vicky Treadell, said the deal was “one of the top four” on her government’s priority list.

“We will want market access for areas of strength for us. So, for example, financial and related professional services, being able to come into the banking sector,” she told the ABC on Tuesday.

“Equally we know that agriculture is an important part of Australia’s ask so Australian beef farmers, dairy farmers will be hoping for new and more open opportunities in the UK.”

The UK is also looking at Australia’s point-based visa system to harness business and industry skills.

She said renewable energy and more energy efficient technology would form part of the discussions.

A team of EU officials will meet their Australian counterparts in Canberra from February 10 to 14 for the sixth round of negotiations towards the EU-Australia free trade agreement.
